Sony opens the source of its mocopi receiver plugin for 3ds Max

Sony announced on September 10 that its mocopi receiver plugin for 3ds Max is now open source. The release connects wearable motion capture with character animation, rather than introducing a new headset or display.

Confirmed facts

What Sony released

The plugin sends motion captured with mocopi into the Biped animation system in Autodesk 3ds Max in real time. It also converts motion files in BVH or FBX format into BIP files, giving animators an alternative to a live capture session.

Sony links the announcement to a public repository under its own GitHub organization and to an official setup tutorial. Making the source available lets developers inspect the integration instead of treating it solely as a closed download.

What this means for a production workflow

The two supported routes address different stages of animation: live motion reception during capture and file conversion for material already recorded. Neither route removes the need for a compatible capture and animation setup.

The announcement does not establish new mocopi hardware specifications, improve capture accuracy by itself, or promise support for every Autodesk version and character rig. Teams should check Sony's setup documentation and the repository's license and requirements before adopting or modifying the plugin.

Why it matters · Analysis

An inspectable connection between body tracking and an established animation tool could help studios customize avatar and character pipelines. That is relevant to spatial content production, but it is not evidence of a new holographic display or a universal motion-capture solution.
