Confirmed facts

Navigation expands beyond walking directions

Meta says cycling directions and real-time public-transit departures will begin rolling out later in September in the United States and Canada. It is also developing walking instructions that reference visible landmarks in front of the wearer rather than relying only on street names.

These functions depend on supported locations, mapping data, connectivity and rollout status. They should not replace attention to traffic, signs or local safety rules, and the announcement does not establish worldwide navigation coverage.

A voice-driven hologram for calls

The Hologram feature creates a photorealistic digital representation after the user completes a self-capture process in the Meta AI app. During a call, the model infers facial expression from the user's speech and vocal delivery rather than capturing the face live from an outward-facing glasses camera.

Meta plans an Early Access rollout on WhatsApp for US users later in fall 2026. The representation is synthetic and voice-driven, not a continuously captured volumetric video of the wearer. The company has not announced broad availability across all calling services, countries or languages for this first rollout.

Apps, notifications and international availability

Explore is a planned on-glasses app for finding compatible experiences, while calendar controls, selected Threads feeds and mirrored phone notifications extend the display's everyday information functions. Several of these features are described as coming soon, so they should not all be treated as available on every device today.

Online ordering and retail sales began September 23 in Canada and the United Kingdom. Preorders were scheduled to begin progressively in France, Italy and Germany, followed by online and retail availability on October 13. Prescription availability differs by country and date, including a later schedule in Germany.

Why it matters · Analysis

The update shifts Meta Ray-Ban Display from a US-centered launch toward a broader wearable platform built around navigation, notifications and small applications. The hologram feature is technically notable, but its initial US-only Early Access status and inferred expressions make it different from live volumetric telepresence. Staged regional and feature rollouts remain central limitations.
