Meta announces 100-gram VR Glasses for spring 2027 at $1,299.99
Meta used Connect 2026 to introduce VR Glasses, a two-part immersive system built around micro-OLED displays and a separate compute-and-battery puck. The device is scheduled for spring 2027 rather than immediate sale, with a US price of $1,299.99.
Confirmed facts
A glasses-format VR system with an external puck
Meta says the wearable portion weighs about 100 grams and carries the displays and sensors, while a tethered puck provides compute, storage and battery power. The open-sided design and color passthrough are intended to retain awareness of the surrounding room without the straps and front-heavy enclosure associated with conventional headsets.
The company identifies a 5K Infinite Display based on micro-OLED panels, 37 pixels per degree, custom pancake lenses, Dolby Vision and frame-integrated Dolby Atmos audio. Meta has not published every specification needed for a complete comparison, including a detailed field-of-view figure in the announcement.
Media, work and input
Meta positions the product as a personal cinema, a private multi-screen workspace and a gaming device. It says users can control the system through voice, eye input and hand gestures without controllers, and can turn a flat surface into a virtual keyboard and touchpad.
The announced media plan includes 3D streaming, IMAX Enhanced certification and more than 100 immersive live US sports events per year after launch. Those experiences depend on participating services, subscriptions, supported countries and content availability; the announcement does not mean every listed catalog or event is included with the hardware price.
Battery, availability and evidence limits
Meta rates the puck for up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback and says it supports 45W fast charging. Actual endurance may vary by workload, connectivity, brightness, passthrough use and battery condition. The optical tether and pocket-worn puck also remain part of the experience despite the lighter eyewear component.
This is an announced product, not generally available hardware. Meta says sales will begin in spring 2027 for $1,299.99 in the United States. HoloNexa has not independently tested comfort, image quality, tracking, virtual typing, streaming latency or the hologram-calling feature described by the company.
Why it matters · Analysis
Moving displays and sensors into a 100-gram glasses form while shifting compute and battery to a separate puck is a meaningful attempt to reduce facial weight without abandoning high-resolution VR. Whether that architecture becomes a practical alternative to headsets will depend on comfort, field of view, tether management, battery endurance, software support and the quality of the promised media ecosystem after launch.
